Valence 1.5.0 - A new home for your local AI
Valence 1.5 rebuilds the Local AI page around one idea: show you the truth about your machine, then get out of the way.
What’s new
- See what your computer can actually run. The Local AI page now opens with two honest bars - your graphics card’s memory and your system memory, drawn to scale, showing what’s already in use and what’s still free. When a model is running you see exactly where it lives: how much sits on the card, and how much spills into system memory when it doesn’t fully fit. No more guessing why a model feels slow.
- Help me pick. Two questions - what will you use it for, and what matters more - and Valence recommends one model, with its real memory footprint drawn on your machine’s bars before you commit. Change an answer and the recommendation follows.
- All models, honestly marked. The full catalogue lists every size and quality, grouped by family, each row marked with what it runs on - and a plain “Short by N GB” when your machine can’t hold one, instead of letting you find out the hard way.
- Truthful switching. Models you already have are one click under “Ready to switch”, with a progress ring while the swap happens, and the model name in the title bar always matches what is actually answering you.
Fixes
- Downloading a model in the background no longer interrupts the model you’re chatting with - your conversation keeps its AI until you choose to switch.
- Downloads started from the picker now show real progress instead of sitting at 0%.
- Small local models no longer respond to a simple “hello” by inventing a conversation you never had.
- Typing in the memory browser’s filter box works again.
